Mujeeb strikes
This partnership was flourishing so Afghanistan will be delighted with that wicket. It's a timely strike. Gunathilaka wants to bring out the reverse sweep against Mujeeb, he times it quite well but there is a fielder stationed near the boundary and he takes the catch. Sri Lanka are four down now.
Eventful finish to the powerplay
Sri Lanka have redeemed themselves to an extent in the second half of the powerplay following a 20-run sixth over. Rajapaksa and Gunathilaka dealt in boundaries and now they are 41/3 after six overs. Gunathilaka did get a reprieve in that final over of the powerplay when a straightforward chance was dropped but Afghanistan would still be fairly pleased with how they started.
Sri Lanka 5/3
Sri Lanka are in deep trouble here. They have lost one more wicket and this time, it's Nissanka. But the stadium is in shock. The Sri Lankan supporters cannot believe this. The batsman was given out caught behind and he took a review after slight hesitation. Replays suggest that there wasn't a proper spike for the umpire to stay with the onfield call. But he still rules the batsman out.
2 in 2
Wow, this is some start for the Afghans. Farooqi strikes again and the key man Asalanka falls first ball. This one jagged back in sharply to stun Asalanka and he is adjudged lbw. Asalanka decides against taking a review and that is indeed the right call. This is a dream start for Afghanistan. Sri Lanka are 3/2.
What a start!
Great start for Afghanistan as they strike very early. Fazalhaq Farooqi gets one to pitch and come back in slightly to hit Kusal Mendis on the pad. The on-field call is not out but Nabi wants to back his bowler. And that proves to be a great call as the batsman is adjudged lbw following three reds on Hawkeye.
Build up
The big day is finally here. The 2022 Asia Cup kicks off tonight with Sri Lanka taking on Afghanistan. In an ideal world, Sri Lanka was supposed to host the tournament but the political situation in the country has forced this tournament to be held in the UAE. The teams will be familiar with the conditions given the T20 World Cup was held here last year. And now, in another two months, we will be having another T20 World Cup. In that context, this tournament is indeed very important for all teams as they will get to test themselves against top quality opposition.
Even without the T20 World Cup, the Asia Cup is one competition that the traditional bigwigs will be looking to win. Both Sri Lanka and Afghanistan will be looking to lay down an early marker given they have Bangladesh in their group. With the qualifier joining India and Pakistan in the other group, this group containing Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Bangladesh is indeed a bit hard to predict. Not often do we have multi-nation tournaments in a calendar year so the interest levels will definitely be sky high. Let's hope these two teams light up the tournament with a thriller tonight. Welcome to the live blog for the opening game of the 2022 Asia Cup.
