That's that then! DC seal second spot; RCB qualify too

So it's going to be MI vs DC in the first qualifier in Dubai on November 5 while RCB will take on either KKR or SRH based on tomorrow's result in the game between MI and SRH. Among the positives for DC is the clinical performance and the fact that they now have two shots at reaching the final. It's a bitter sweet feeling for RCB to have lost another game but qualification is all that matters. There's always a chance to begin with a blank slate in the knockouts. KKR are closer to the exit door, with their fate resting in MI's form on the day. We'll have to wait and see how that turns out tomorrow.

And now RCB are through too...

Once RCB took the game beyond 18.2, their spot in the playoffs was sealed too. Now the winner of these two teams will go second, and KKR will spend Tuesday rooting for Mumbai Indians to dump SRH out of the tournament. What a ride this tournament has been!

Rahane is gone, but DC are through!

Yes you read that right! Because of having gone past 134 in this chase, DC's NRR cannot dip lower than KKR's. There was a wicket by the way, when Rahane tried to get cheeky after such a good knock. He went for a reverse sweep against Washington Sundar and hit it straight to the short third man fielder.

Another wicket for Shahbaz Ahmed

A bit unnecessary from Shreyas Iyer there. The scoring had gone down in the last few overs but Rahane had still ensured DC were on course here. The asking rate was only around six-an-over but Iyer tried to cut loose anyway and perished.

The partnership breaks

Shikhar Dhawan is gone. He tried to play the scoop against Shahbaz Ahmed but didn't connect well enough to beat Shivam Dube at short fine leg. He falls for a 41-ball 54.

A catchy fifty for Dhawan

Another big performance from the DC opener. He's had his share of luck with none of the many inside edges hitting the stumps. At other times he's middled the ball beautifully with his drives and cuts and sweeps. Great day to recover from a mini-slump.

Match slipping away from RCB's feeble grasp

Excellent stand from Rahane and Dhawan. They've negated two overs of Kohli's best bowling option - Yuzvendra Chahal - and look rather comfortable against everybody else. AB de Villiers continues to chirp from the behind the stumps but as it stands, DC are dragging this game away from RCB here.

Good start for Rahane so far...

He's been very timid in the few outings he's had so far but today he looks a lot more confident. He's opted to sweep against Washington Sundar and punched one through the offside off Isuru Udana. He looks... bright so far.

At the end, Shikhar Dhawan is cutting and driving for fun. He had a very short lull after his twin tons but he's looking good tonight. DC will benefit greatly from him prolonging that until the halfway stage at the very least.

Heard on the stump-mic... an AB sledge?

"Not a long batting line-up. Just two more here boys" - says the RCB keeper.

For all the permutation and combinations nerds out there...

Prelude: Fight for second spot? or Survival?

The premise of this second-last league stage fixture should tell you all you need to know about the crazy ride that has been IPL 2020. Royal Challengers Bangalore and Delhi Capitals had 12 and 14 points respectively after nine games each, comfortably breezing through with Mumbai Indians.

While MI have showed why they are the most consistent, well-oiled, machine-like unit by continuing their run, RCB and DC have faltered quite spectacularly. At a time when they should've secured their qualification, they're now left to tackle the possibility of not making the playoffs.

The winner tonight will secure second spot. But the loser too can sneak in. Confused? Thought as much because it's actually an interesting but complicated equation, best explained by our numbers genius, Deepu Narayanan here
