Windies can't afford to lose any of the One-Day Internationals against England if they want to earn a direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup. Before that, they have an opportunity to get in the groove for the crucial series in the T20I game.
The last time England and Windies met in a T20 was in Kolkata in April 2016. Then, Carlos Brathwaite struck four consecutive sixes off Ben Stokes' final over to lead the men from the Caribbean to an unlikely World T20 victory. Brathwaite is now captain of Windies and will lead his team in a rather less pressurised game).
Stokes, controversially rested by the ECB, will not be in Durham for the one-off game and nor will Moeen Ali or Chris Woakes but England have picked a strong squad for the match including Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan, all of whom were involved in the Test matches. Adil Rashid returns to the squad after missing the 2-1 series win against South Africa earlier this summer and there are nine survivors in all from that match in Kolkata.
