While the West Indies team that won two World Cups in 2012 and 2016 were widely regarded as the first international T20 dynasty, by 2019 they were, in the eyes of many, eclipsed as T20's greatest side by the Mumbai Indians.
By the end of the 2010s the IPL was often thought to be the highest standard of T20 outside a select few match-ups between international cricket's strongest sides: Australia, India, England and - when at full strength - the West Indies. The combination of an open market, India's vast talent pool and the wealth of IPL sides meant the league's best sides would be considered favourites against most international teams.
